When the photovoltaic module replaces a glass, semi-transparency is an important factor for the internal space well being, as far as the light level is concerned but also in terms of thermal contribution. The semi-transparency of the cell, i.e. the quantity of light that enters, is varying between 0 and 30% (standard 20%), while the efficiency diminishes proportionally.

Mono- and multicrystalline modules
The degree of transparency of the modules is given by changing the distance between the cells. There are also performing cells that allow allow the increase of transparency. The semi-transparency of the crystalline silicon modules can be obtained, as well as through an appropriate assembly of the cells within the module, also to the scale of the solar cell. It is in fact possible to perform performations with the laser in order to punctually remove the material and give a semi-transparent effect.

Thin film modules
The transparency of the modules is determined by the absence of the reflective layer placed below the cells, or by a laser etching process that allows to create a semi-transparent effect. This way, a coating with a homogeneous transparency completely identical to that obtainable with a colored glass can be achieved.
