Traditionally, the background color of the modules in white or black. It is however possible to change the background color by varying the color of the encapsulant material (usually EVA or Polyvinyl Butyral - PVB). The use of glass in the photovoltaic modules permits the variation of color, features and creation of engraved drawings.

The background may also be transparent. This way the modules can be used in the construction as semitransparent materials.
